Common questions
- How do I make a scanned PDF searchable?
- Open the PDF and choose Tools ▸ Recognize text with OCR, or use it from the home screen. Documents you scan in the app are recognized automatically when "Recognize Text (OCR)" is on in the review screen. Free use covers 30 pages per document; PDF OCR Pro has no limit.
- How do I scan a document?
- Tap Scan to PDF on the home screen and hold the camera over the page; the edges are found and the page is straightened for you. Scan as many pages as you like, then reorder, rotate or delete them, name the file and save. Scans are saved in the Files app under On My iPhone (or iPad) ▸ PDFOCR.
- How do I write, highlight or sign?
- Open a PDF and tap the pencil button to show the markup bar. Choose the pen, marker, note, eraser or redact tool, or use + for shapes, stamps and your signature. To highlight text, choose the text tool, select the text, and pick Highlight, Underline or Strikethrough. Save with More ▸ Save, or when the app asks as you leave the document.
- How do I move or resize something I added?
- Choose the hand tool in the markup bar and tap the shape, stamp, note, signature or stroke. Drag it to move it, drag a corner to resize it, or tap it again for Delete. Dragging anywhere else scrolls the page as usual.
- How does redaction work?
- Choose the redact tool (the black square) and drag over what to remove, or select text and tap Redact. Find Text marks every match in the document. Marks stay editable until you tap Apply or save; then the marked pages become images with the areas blacked out, so the hidden text is removed from the file for good. This cannot be undone, so keep a copy of the original if you may need it. Redaction is part of PDF OCR Pro.
- What does PDF OCR Pro include?
- OCR without page limits, advanced split (every N pages, ranges, cut after pages), redaction, watermarks and page numbers, Face ID lock, suggested names for scans, on-device summaries and page translation, and Shortcuts actions. Choose monthly, yearly (with a 7-day free trial) or a one-time lifetime purchase.
- I used PDF OCR before version 3.0. Do I have to pay now?
- No. If you first installed the app before 3.0, the features that were free then — OCR without a page limit, Manage Permission and Remove Security — stay free for you. The new Pro features are optional.
- How do I restore my purchase or cancel a subscription?
- To restore on a new device, open Settings in the app and tap Restore Purchases (also on the Pro screen). Subscriptions are managed by Apple: open the iOS Settings app ▸ your name ▸ Subscriptions. Cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends to avoid the next charge.
- Summarize says it isn't available.
- Summaries use Apple Intelligence on your device, which needs iOS 26 or later on a supported iPhone or iPad with Apple Intelligence turned on in the iOS Settings app. The document also needs text; run OCR first on scanned PDFs.
- Can I use PDF OCR from Shortcuts?
- Yes, with PDF OCR Pro. The Shortcuts app lists PDF OCR actions to recognize text in a PDF, compress a PDF, merge PDFs, and make a PDF from images.
- Are my documents uploaded anywhere?
- No. Scanning, text recognition, redaction and summaries run on your device. The app only sends anonymous usage statistics and crash reports, which you can turn off in Settings ▸ Share usage data. See the privacy policy for details.
